Many online gaming and wagering sites employ different methods and promotions to entice players to either sign up or remain as a player. With hundreds and thousands of different gaming sites out there, it may seem like they are all offering something attractive. While it’s true that these sites do offer many promotions, knowing how to maximize these programs and bonuses will not only make your play enjoyable, but they may also increase your winnings.

How do you go about making sure you take advantage of bonuses such as a no deposit bonus or other free play options? Here is a look at just how to do that.

Read All About It

While it may seem like common sense, make sure that you read the fine print about the bonuses and promotions. This information should be listed on a promotions or other similar page on the casino’s site. You can determine the requirements of a particular bonus. For instance, you may be required to deposit some money in order to receive that bonus. You may also be required to play for a certain amount of time before the bonus kicks in.

Do Some Analysis

You can maximize your bonus by checking out your starting position. While the majority of gaming sites will give you a bonus — some may even give you additional ones — you should check on the limitations. Make sure that you understand the player advantages that are offered by the bonus. You definitely want to understand the limits of the bonus: for example, how much you are allowed wager of the bonus and which games you can play and for how long.

Loyalty Bonuses

Loyalty bonuses are designed to entice the player to continue visiting the site and wagering. While you may receive an initial sign up bonus, you may start receiving additional bonuses or promotions to ensure your continued play. These can include other benefits to play other games or an increase in your deposit amount. For instance, if you deposited $100, the casino may give you an extra 10 percent to continue your play past the introductory stage.

Make sure that you determine the various options that you can use. There are options for first-time gamblers that will allow you to learn the ins and outs of a game. No matter the bonuses offered, just make sure that the casino is reputable and will protect your identity, as well as your gambling funds and winnings.

When it comes to online faxing, it may seem like something totally foreign. You may feel as if you have no time to learn something new, and think that your old fax machine is enough to help you.

But lately, you’ve wondered if a change is in order. You’re always buying new ink cartridges, getting the machine repaired, keeping the machine supplied with paper, etc. Perhaps you’ve thought more than once that there has to be an easier and more cost-effective way to fax and receive your documents.

And there is. Here are a few reasons why you should choose online faxing:

Online Faxing Will Save you Money

It’s free or practically free. Some services offer up to 500 free pages a month. And if you have a small business, you won’t even use or receive half that much. Fax companies that charge will give you a 30-day free trial to see if you like the service. To top it off, you don’t have to install an extra phone line or keep up a machine, buy toner, ink and paper.

The Cost is the Same No Matter Where you Send

Fax to anywhere in the world and pay no more than what you would spend on a regular service.. Unlike snail-mail where the document is weighed and sufficient postage is applied, nothing changes in the realms of online faxing whether you send a document to Africa or to New York City.

Customize the Fax Service to Your Specific Company Needs

Do you need unlimited online fax storage, 24/7 customer support and a low monthly fee without losing added perks? Find online fax services that gives you what you want by researching your needs.

Make it Easy

Let someone else handle the machine and give your business some extra desk space. Just type in the information into a website, smart phone or email and send.

Image via Wikipedia

Fax from Anywhere you Choose

Instead of being tied to your home and fax machine, fax wherever you happen to be at the moment. Fax from your cell phone or Blackberry while eating lunch or in a free moment while you’re on vacation.

In the long run, online faxing saves you time and money, giving you the well-needed cash and space to do other things—and you know there are many things to do whether you own a business or not. Use the ideas above to get you started.

For professionals, gambling is not just a hobby. It is an art – a science even – that has scientific and academic foundations. For those who wish to become successful in gambling and sports betting, reading through gambling books can be of great help. However, it does not necessarily mean that you need to go to a public library or buy expensive books from bookstores. You can get access to numerous gambling e-books from online bookstores and some of them are available for free.

Through these simple steps below, you can find the best gambling books from online libraries that can help you turn the odds to your advantage.

Steps on how to find the best gambling books online

1. Research on gambling book titles that you’d like to read about. There are numerous gambling books that have been published through the years, research on book titles that are specific to your game. For instance, if you are into poker, find books that are dedicated or related to poker.

2. Shorten your list of must-read gambling books by reading book reviews. Even if you narrow down your must-read list to the books that only focus on your favorite games, you will still find the list too long. Filter the list further by browsing through book reviews to see which ones are worth searching and reading.

2. Look for a reliable online library. There are a lot of online libraries in the Web today. Most of these libraries are home to vast collections of e-books from different categories and genres. Meanwhile, you can also find some that are dedicated to providing e-books specific to gambling. A reliable online library offers great title selections. You can also look for reviews about the online libraries that you find online.

For you to have the best gambling research experience, make sure that you follow these easy steps on how to find the best gambling books online.

Imagine having to work multiple jobs just to put food on the table, teetering one bill over another because you cannot afford to pay everything on time. Unfortunately, this is reality for many Americans. It can be difficult to find salvation during such dire times, and many people lose their optimistic outlook on life as a result.

Many people who find themselves stuck in this seeming unending cycle of tireless work and debt are unaware of the options that are available to them. Financial assistance does exist; and in many forms. Below are three of the most commonly used forms of financial assistance and how they can best be utilized.

Image via Flickr

Borrow From Friends and Family

While turning to friends or family can cause a large ding to one’s pride, it is a practical solution during times of financial strain. In most cases, friends and family members are happy to oblige if they are able. Just make sure that if this becomes a semi-regular occurrence that there are set repayment terms to reduce misunderstandings and subsequent squabbles down the road.

Installment Loans

There is always the loom of emergency expenses associated with everyday life. For people who are already financially strained, these emergency expenses are oftentimes unaffordable. In some situations, it can come down to a parent not having the financial means to pay for the medical treatment of a sick child.

Fortunately, there are resources such as installment loans to help cover such emergency expenses. Installment loans provide quick access to emergency funds to make sure those medical expenses get paid, or that utility bill gets covered before getting shut off.

Installment loans are simple and straight-forward, offering a varied amount of money depending on need, for a fixed monthly payment throughout the life of the loan.

Sell Unused Items

Many people have hundreds, if not thousands of dollars of items just sitting around their house. In most cases, these items are completely unused and neglected. If you find yourself in need of additional funds, sift through that overloaded closet, or cramped garage and see just what kind of treasure trove you might come across. For all you know, that top shelf in the garage could have another car payment sitting on it.

Fortunately, in these troubling times, there are practical resources available in getting financial assistance. Whether you take advantage of an installment loan to remedy and emergency car repair, or you sell that old piece of Grandma’s jewelry to fund tuition, there are always options available.

What other ideas do you have to get financial assistance? Share them in the comments.

Sometimes traveling can seem like a chore. Long lines, uncomfortable seats and a hectic atmosphere sometimes make you wonder if traveling is even worth it. Here are a few tips to help you survive the plane ride. Following this advice may even make the travel enjoyable!

Use Electronics

If you have any electronics (smartphone, tablet PC, MP3 player), bring them on the plane. You can’t use these devices during take-off and landing, and during flight, they need to be set to airplane mode (if available), but few things are as distracting as the electronic devices you use to distract yourself all day long. Load up your favorite movie or playlist and forget about the time slipping by while you enjoy a little bit of home at 30,000 feet.

Pay for In-Flight Entertainment

Some flights offer in-flight entertainment, such as radio stations or personal viewing screens. If you enjoy watching TV, paying a few dollars to use this service might be just the thing for you. You can watch reruns of popular TV shows or catch in-flight movies that will keep you entertained for the duration of the flight.

Image via Wikipedia

Read a Book

The beauty of reading a book on the airplane is that you don’t have to “turn it off” for takeoff and landing, as is the case with electronics. Some airport bookstores have a “Read and Return” program that allows you to buy a book in one airport and return it to a sister shop in another airport to receive a portion of your money back. It’s like checking out a book for the length of your trip.

Read a Magazine

Magazines are another good media choice for airplanes. Flipping through the glossy pages might just take your mind off the flight and back into your living room. Some airlines even provide magazines that passengers can keep.

Talk to Other Passengers

Don’t be afraid to be chatty. Talk to the other passengers! You’re stuck next to someone for a few hours, so why not get to know that person a little? You already have something in common: you’re headed to the same destination! Use caution, though. Don’t give out personal details such as addresses or phone numbers.

Flight Attendants

Flight attendants are there to be at your service, so let them make your flight comfortable. Don’t hesitate to use your flight attendant call button to ask for a pillow, a blanket or a glass of water.

Image via Wikipedia

Holiday travel doesn’t have to take the fun out of holidays. A few forms of entertainment and a little friendliness go a long way to making your flight enjoyable.

Most people around the world use Internet for various reasons. It has now become very important to protect the online privacy. Online protection is very important for anyone who wants to protect their identity. There are many malicious programs and people online that can harm, delete, and damage any content in the computer. Here are few steps to protect online privacy.

Image via Wikipedia

First important and basic step is to create password that cannot be easily cracked by malicious codes or hackers. A good password is one that is a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. Often, hackers cannot crack a password like this. It is better to avoid name or personal details as password and passwords should be changed periodically.

Some people tend to save their passwords in files. This is not a good practice and it is always better to hide passwords. Additionally, an individual should not share their passwords to anyone, even to their close friends or family members. If a person has shared the password, then it is better to change it immediately.

Email is another section where most hackers try to attack systems. The users should not open attachments from the malicious or unknown emails. Email protection programs should be enabled. While browsing, people should share their private information only to the trusted and reliable website.

Firewall program and trusted anti-virus should be installed on the system. Today, there are many programs available that helps the user to browse the Internet anonymously without sharing any personal information. Finally, it is a must for the computer users to do regular scans.

Password is one of the important factors for online protection. A password tells who the user is and how the system is protected. It becomes very important to safeguard the password as it is the key to access the online accounts. Anyone who has or can guess passwords can easily access personal details and can damage the entire system.

Image via Wikipedia

Tips for Protecting the Passwords

First important step is not to share the passwords with anyone. Next important step is that the password created should be easily remembered. Most people tend to forget complex passwords and they write it down to remember. This is not a good action as anyone can gain access to passwords. Some scam emails may advice the user to change passwords, but the user should not react to such mails. Finally, passwords should be something very difficult for others to guess.

What should be avoided while Creating Password?

There are certain things that should be avoided while choosing passwords. They are words from the dictionary, real name, user name, words from the cracking dictionary, spouse name, and mirrored word from the dictionary,

How to Choose a Good Password?

A good password should be at least six characters long, should be the mixture of letters, symbols, and numbers, symbols should be added in the middle of the password, and deliberately misspelling the password. It is better to combine several techniques while creating passwords and even an uncommon phrase can be squeezed in to passwords. The uppercase and lowercase letters can be used alternatively in the passwords.

Internet has become the basic need for many people and most of the children are now using Internet for various activities. It becomes very important for the elders to protect the child online privacy as there are many people out there who could use the innocence of the child. Here are few steps to protect the children from the Internet threats.

Today, technology is advancing at the light speed and it becomes very important for the parents to educate themselves about the latest fads available online. Teenagers and older children normally search for any latest information that might lead to any malicious or unwanted websites. By analyzing and educating themselves with the latest fads, parents can block malicious websites and can even install kids safety policies in the system.

Children are exposed to various new influences through TV, friends, and school. Therefore, parents should assume that their child will not access inappropriate websites. Most kids are tech savvy or love to play games online, therefore they browse so many websites for entertainment and fun. There are many parental management software applications in the market that helps the parents to track their children exposure and time on the Internet.

Parents can activate parental control software and can activate or block websites according to the child’s age and parents can even filter websites or limit the searches. Finally, it is very important to communicate with the children about the dangers online and parents should restrict their children from chatting with any strangers.

As the Cat Stevens’ song Wild World, says “Take good care, hope you make a lot of nice friends out there, but just remember there’s a lot of bad and beware“, the same goes for the Internet.

There is beauty in the world and many great people, but there are also many ugly aspects in life, and bad people who wish to inflict harm on others.

The Internet is the same way, in that the advantages for children growing up today in the world of computers includes exploring and obtaining an infinite amount of information. Children can learn about different ways of life, expanding their horizons about different cultures, and a world of opportunities awaiting them.

There are cyber-bullies and cyber-stalkers, waiting to pounce, that can ruin the Internet experience for them.

Cyber- stalking vs. cyber- bullying

Cyber-stalkers seek to threaten the safety, reputation, or even the employment and earnings of others. Victims of cyber-stalkers can experience a number of adverse affects including frustration, fear, and low self-esteem. These adversities prevent users from using the Internet to connect with peers and to engage in healthy online activities.

Cyber-stalkers will target people they do not know personally, but who might have angered them in some way, in their minds, and they seek to avenge the discretion. Cyber-bullies, on the other hand, target someone they know, attempting to destroy them emotionally, just as real-life bullies do.

Adults should take control of either situation. Changing ISP’s, phone numbers and e-mail addresses, might be necessary to lose a cyber-stalker. Taking steps to end cyber-bullying include contacting the website where the cyber-bullying is taking place, contacting their ISP, and even contacting the parents of cyber-bullies, as well as school officials involved.

Parents are responsible for keeping their children safe. They walk their young children to and from school, and ensure that an adult is supervising them at all times, whether at home, at school, or at play.

Parents also need to supervise and limit the amount of time their child spends online, and monitor the websites their child visits. Taking a few simple precautions regarding a child’s time on the Internet, can ensure a safe environment for a child when he or she is online.

Talk to children about Internet safety

Once a child is old enough, and capable of going online on their own, parents must explain rules to the child regarding what they can and cannot do, online. This includes telling children about revealing personal information, including their real name, age, or the name of the school they attend.

Go online with your child

Introduce the Internet to your child while you are present. Visit sites deemed by you to be safe, and be there to fill out any forms necessary to register for these sites. Children are attracted to sites that have games and puzzles, and parents can even scope out these sites on their own, before showing them to the child.

Passwords and User names

Not limited to young children, parents should know the user names and passwords their children use online. Older children will balk at this at first. However, parents should explain their reasons for doing so. Let children know that you do not intend to stalk them or butt into their business, but that you intend to look for warning signs they might miss, that could place their child in danger while online.

A child’s safety is worth taking these extra precautions.

The success of social networking sites in recent years depends upon the millions of Internet users that use the sites to post photos, share information, and reconnect with long lost relatives and friends. Unfortunately, as with all aspects of one’s online presence, users of social networking sites need to take precautions to protect themselves online.

Because adults joined Facebook to keep up with family announcements and events, and to catch up with friends they have not seen in years, some people may let their guard down. Practice a few safety tips to protect yourself from others online that you are not ‘friends’ with, who may wish to do you, or your computer, harm.

Too Much Information

Because all humans differ in their opinions on a range of topics, there are bound to be heated discussions even from one little comment made on a social networking site. To protect yourself from strangers joining in on the discussion, be careful about how much information you share. Additionally, check the privacy settings of social networking sites to see who can view the information you share about yourself.

Advertisers and Get-Rich Quick Scams

If you spend any amount of time on social networking sites, you may notice the little ads on the screen that mysteriously seem to target your interests and likes. This is probably no accident. If you fill in the page about you, with interests and favorites, the ads will more often than not, match your interests.

Clicking on ads within social networking sites may inadvertently give permission for the social networking site to share certain information with their advertisers.

As with any site you visit online, the less information you share about yourself, is always best.

The first lawsuit for illegally downloading copyrighted songs began on April 19, 2006.

The Recording Industry Association of America represents more than 1600 members of the recording industry. The four largest members of RIAA are EMI, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group. The RIAA claims its total retail value of recordings sold by members was $10.4 billion for 2007.

On April 19, 2006, several major record labels sued Jammie Thomas, a Native American mother of four, for copyright infringement. In the first of three civil jury trials, the jury awarded the plaintiffs a total of $222,000, or $9,250 per song download.

At the end of the second trial, the jury awarded the plaintiffs $1,920,000, equally $80,000 worth of damage per song. The judge then lowered the damages to $2,250 for each song, for a total of $54,000, an amount the plaintiffs rejected. On November 4, 2010, the jury awarded the plaintiffs $62,500, per song, 1.5 million dollars total.

According to the RIAA website, at the end of 2007, the total retail value of recordings sold by members of the RIAA is $10.4 billion.

The suit found Jammie Thomas liable for illegally downloading and sharing the following 24 sound recordings on Kazaa, a peer-to-peer file sharing application:

Cryin

Somebody

Pour Some Sugar on Me

Bills, Bills, Bills

Rhythm Is Gonna Get You

Here We Are

Coming Out of the Dark

Iris

Basket Case

Welcome to the Jungle

November Rain

Let’s Wait Awhile

Don’t Stop Believin

Faithfully

One Step Closer

Different People

Bathwater

Hella Good

Possession

Building a Mystery

Run Baby Run

Save the Best for Last

Which one of these songs is worth paying $62,500 each?

In 1971, Bob Thomas of Bolt, Beranek and Newman Technologies, now BBN, wrote an experimental self-replicating program titled Creeper, to demonstrate a mobile application. Even though the term computer virus did not exist in that decade, Creeper was the first computer virus.

It used the ARPANET to infect the Digital Equipment Corporation’s PDP-10, a mainframe computer that was the precursor to the Internet, running the TENEX operating system. The Creeper worm copied itself to the remote system.

Although the Creeper seldom replicated itself, it did start to print a file and then stop. It would find another TENEX system, open a connection, pick itself up, and transfer it to the other machine, each time displaying the message, “I’m the creeper, catch me if you can!” It jumped from one machine to another trying to remove itself from the previous machine. Therefore, it never installed itself on targets, but worked its way around a network.

To delete the Creeper worm, programmers created The Reaper Program. This program ran on workstations and servers, terminating sessions that appeared hung, or idle. The Reaper Program uses system measurements to determine how long a connection is idle. Hung connections are connections active for more than five hours, whether idle or not.

The Reaper Program kills all programs associate with those processes, and logs the user off the computer.

Other computer virus firsts:

Elk Cloner – first computer virus to appear in the wild

*(c) Brain – first PC virus in the wild (a boot sector virus)

*In 1986, the Farooq Alvi Brothers, supposedly created the (c) Brain virus to prevent others from pirating their software.

A Web host company will provide you with space to host your website ,A domain name and a whole host of scripts from forum software to shopping cart integration.

If you want to be seen on the internet you will need a web host, but do not just go picking any host. You need a reliable web host who offers a quality service. So here comes a few of my own personal needs before i sign up with a web host.

Price, Ok this is not the most significant factor when choosing a web host, but we do not want to be paying stupid prices for a service we can get just as good from someone else at half the price.

Experience, This is one of the things i expect from a web host, Yes every company has to start somewhere but why should you be the one to suffer if someone does not have the experience to keep your site online at least 95% of the time.

Reputation, as anyone who has a business knows reputation goes a long way, make sure you choose someone with a good one.

The best way to protect yourself online is to use common sense and to understand the ways in which others can use certain information you provide, against you.

McAfee, Symantec, and other programs can help you to prevent harmful viruses from attacking your computer. Protecting your personal information is your responsibility. Knowing what to do, and what not to do online, can prevent others from acquiring private information they can use against you.

Monitor Yourself

Always remember that once you post a photo or text on a social networking site or on other online communities, it is fair game. Even if you decide you want to remove the photo or delete the post, several people may have already saved it to their computer. They may distribute it all over the internet.

Think before you post. Do you want the world to see or read it? If the answer is no, do not post it.

Remember who can see what you do on social networking sites and where what you do can be shared with others.

Getting Personal

When signing up to become part of an online community, whether it is a message board, social networking site, or chat rooms, use common sense when sharing information:

Always read the site’s privacy policy to find out who has access to any information you post

View the privacy settings that you have control over and if you have no control, limit what you share

Set up an additional free email account you can use for these sites. This will limit the amount of spam and junk mail you receive in the email account you use for work or business

Try to use an online screen name that does not give clues to your real name or any other personal information about you

Do not accept bribes or promises of rewards, in exchange for your personal information

As the Internet has drastically grown in popularity over the years, there is a vast world of innovative and interactive activities to perform while connected. Whether someone is simply looking to quickly find a snippet of information through one of the various search engines, or they are wanting to watch a music video via one of the many popular video sharing sites there is endless array of activities to be done. One of the more popular of these is exploring social networking sites. The reason why these types of sites are so popular is due to the fact that they make it easy to re-connect with people you might not have seen for years. Whether it is an old class-mate that moved cross country after graduation, or family from out of town; there are many reasons that people enjoy the social networking aspect of the Internet.

However, with the benefits of social networking come the prospective problems that tie hand in hand with it. Among one of the largest and most widely known problems is the issue dealing with privacy on these types of sites. Popular social networking sites have recently come under fire regarding their privacy policies; in that they are putting users private information into the public eye. The main aspect of this problem revolves around the fact that on many of these sites, when somebody signs up, their information is set to public by default. The problem lies in that there was no warning to person telling them their information was public, so they did not fix it.

Since that issue came to light, many of the popular social networking sites have been required to change the way in which they operate regarding privacy. However, it is vital that you double check your account settings to ensure that any information you do not want people who are not friends to see is not set to public.

The Internet is an extremely popular place in this modernized society we live in. With the various ways in which people can access it, more people are hopping online than ever before. However, with the this large amount of people going online and connecting to the Internet comes a larger amount of people who are unaware of the possible dangers that exist. Among one of the more widely debated aspects of online security in general to help neutralize these potential threats is anti-virus software. There are a great deal of individuals who utilize the Internet and do not have a viable anti-virus software running on their machine. Additionally, if they were to look, they would be unsure as to which software to go with. Clearly, this can pose a problem. Anti-virus software can be good and bad for your machine depending on which piece you go with.

To begin with, the pros of anti-virus software is that it acts as a safety net that catches any potential problems that pop up as you surf the Internet. Additionally, the software that is popular by today’s standards is typically automated, and does everything for you so you do not have to worry about maintaining anything. As such, it can be a viable tool in which to neutralize many of the online threats.

However, anti-virus software can be debilitating to your machine as well. While in fact the resource allocation is not as much of a problem anymore due to the implementation of dual-core processors, it can still delay start-up time. Additionally, some pieces of anti-virus software periodically spam users with pop-ups pertaining to the other products the developer might be trying to peddle. Clearly, this is an annoying issue that in itself can be more problematic than the various viruses the software is trying to neutralize.

With large amounts of new people buying computers for the first time and entering the online world that is the Internet, there is a great deal of marketing opportunities for people who employ unethical practices in obtaining customers and attempting to get people interested in their products. Many people are keen on these widely used practices and know what to avoid and what not to avoid. However, with the vast amount of new people entering the Internet on a daily basis, there is a great threat in regards to them potentially getting taken advantage of. Things like incentives and other various tactics that are commonly used to get potential customers attention are implemented, and people who are unsure of what a good opportunity is over another take the bait and sign up for the service. The most widely used incentive in regards to this issue is the use of free download incentives.

The problem with free download incentives is that they are rarely what they are made out to be. No company in their right mind is going to provide a customer with their product or service right out of the gate without attaching some sort of a catch. What is worse is that developers of potential viruses and mal-ware use this tactic as well and disguise their program as a useful service that supposedly helps the customers. However, upon downloading and installing the program, they are faced with a potential danger in the virus that persists.

People who unknowingly download these incentives either end up with one of two things. The first of these things is a virus or piece of mal-ware that runs rampant on their system and monitors their search patterns to present unwanted ads on the Internet pages they visit. Secondly, they are faced with agreeing to something that ends up costing them money in the long run. Either way, people from all ends of the spectrum should be extremely cautious when going the route of taking advantage of a free downloads, ensure you know what you are getting yourself into.

As more businesses begin moving their workload onto the Internet, including making the transition from a brick and mortar storefront to that of a purely online storefront, they are faced with the challenge of evolving their marketing strategies. These companies are having to make the shift from traditional television and radio marketing to legitimate Internet marketing and search engine optimization. Additionally, they must have ways to entice people to become visitors of their sites and or try their products and services. Among one of the most popular ways that online businesses accomplish getting people to visit their sites is by offering free downloads of a specific product or service that relates to their business.

Unfortunately, there are many people that are looking to make money and get rich quick by utilizing the power of the Internet. These people also use tactics such as free downloads in which to entice people to try their products. However, these types of free downloads tend to have a lot of baggage tied into their installation. There are instances in which in order to download the free product or service, a visitor must agree to small print or specific terms and conditions prior to making the download. Unfortunately, many people do not read these terms and conditions, as a free download does not typically entail the need to agree to something that will be regretted later on. As a result, they go ahead and download the product or service and find that for the next few following months they have been charged for multiple other services that have nothing to do with the initial download.

These types of practices are extremely shady, but prevalent in the online world. As a result of this, it is vital to ensure you read the small print and always remain weary when it comes to putting in credit card information for something that is supposedly going to be free. While there are many legitimate companies out there, there are an equal amounts of illegitimate companies that employ unethical tactics to make money.

As the rise of the Internet continues in our modern society, more companies are moving massive amounts of their business to the online world on a regular basis. As this becomes more prevalent, marketing strategies and other aspects of getting people to become aware of the products the business is offering are going to have to evolve into something that is more functional for the internet. Among one of the most widely used and popular tactics employed by online businesses is to offer free downloads of various products and services. People tend to be enticed by the prospect of a free product, and thus will flock to the web site of the company in order to obtain these freebies. Theoretically, while the visitors are on the site looking for the free download, they will be furnished with the types of goods and services offered by the company. However, many illegitimate companies use this tactic as well, and create a slew of problems for those people who do download their “free” product or service.

Typically, when a free download is offered, the visitor must enter some generalized information such as their name and email address in order to gain access to the download. This is one way that companies get people on their email lists so that they can periodically send them updates on new products or services. However, the entities that practice unethical ways and utilize the free download tactic do not send the visitors on their email lists legitimate product updates and information regarding their company, but spam their in-boxes with various pieces of advertisements hoping to make a quick buck.

Another, and much less desirable tactic employed by the malicious entities that utilize free downloads to entice visitors is to cloak the free download as something that is helpful when in fact it is a virus. Visitors unknowingly download and install this virus on their computer thinking it is a helpful product or service for their computer. Unfortunately, these types of viruses remain unchecked for long periods of time, and can wreak havoc on the machine in which they are infecting.

The internet is an ever changing environment full of positive and useful user experiences, as well as an equal amount of potential dangers. As the internet has become a more prevalent place for people to conduct their shopping and purchasing of various products and services, internet marketing has begun to explode in terms of earnings and entrepreneurial opportunities. As such, there are countless digital products that provide a specific service to your computer, or form of entertainment and information in various formats. This is quickly becoming a popular way in which to transfer goods and services, as it drastically reduces and even eliminates the cost of materials to make physical copies of the products. Unfortunately, many ominous practices have been mixed in with this activity that can make it potentially dangerous for consumers.

Many marketers that participate in the digital product industry tend to offer “freebies” as an incentive for potential buyers of their product to gain some initial interest. These free products generally come in the form of a download after a potential customer has signed up for a mailing list or for a paid product. Among the industries that practice this commonly are anti-virus developers that offer a free comprehensive virus scan for your computer. The unfortunate side of this is that in order for the anti-virus scan to be conducted, it requires the downloading of a program that supposedly conducts the scan. However, hackers and malicious content producers understand this concept, and write programs that are actually viruses themselves. Upon creating the virus, they offer it as a free download virus scan for fake virus scanning software.

Many of these types of dangerous downloads occur on sites that have a great deal of pop ups and a generally pushy theme. If you find yourself directed to a web site that seems a bit pushy, or provides any number of flashy pop ups that ask for you do download something, chances are you should avoid that web site completely because more than likely, anything you download will be more harmful to your machine than helpful.

Because the Internet is such an integral part of today’s society and will continue to be so for the future, if you are a parent, it is important that you take steps to introduce your children to the Internet from an early age to ensure that they will be able to lead a technologically-competent lifestyle. Most employers expect their employees to have a firm grasp on computer basics, and computers are also a large part of the American school system. Therefore, you can see why it’s important to help your kids feel comfortable when using the Internet, but you must also realize that the online world poses many hazards to young people. Ideally, you should monitor your children’s Internet usage carefully with a combination of interactive teaching as they browse the Internet, and the parental controls offered through most Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) and web browsers.

The use of parental control functionality is particularly importance because many Internet predators purposefully create objectionable websites with addresses that are very similar to legitimately educational destinations in hopes that children will mistakenly type in an address and end up in the wrong place. Parental controls can be set in such a way to only allow your children to visit a specified list of sites, while all other destinations are blocked. In their image search engine, Google has a “safe search” functionality that attempts to filter out all adult content, while popular streaming video website YouTube has a similar option.

However, there is no substitute for parental interaction to help ensure that your children have a safe and fun experience online. Coach them never to reveal personal details after first meeting someone, and warn them that the very nature of the Internet makes it easy for a person to pretend to be someone they’re not. By enforcing Internet rules and sparking discussion topics from an early age, you are helping your children remain safe in the ever-changing Internet world.

If you browse the Internet often, there’s a good chance that you’ll come in contact with a website or e-mail that attempts to lure you to provide personal information through “phishing”. This type of computer hacking attempt is particularly sneaky and dangerous because it works on the assumption that you’ll willingly provide your data to a hacker without even knowing it. If you’re thinking that there’s no possibility that such a thing could happen to you, think again. Some phishing attempts are so well thought out that they are constructed using realistic graphics meant to emulate well-known companies and services such as your bank or your workplace.

Sometimes the sender of the e-mail will appear to be legitimate, because they have some sort of e-mail address that appears to be related to the supposed company who needs your data. For example, a phishing attempt from someone who is attempting to hack into your PayPal account may assert that they are a representative from the online bidding website Ebay, and send you a message from “accounts@e.bay.com.” At first glance, this appears to be a valid address, but further investigation would reveal that true Ebay e-mail correspondence would have a slightly different e-mail format.

A common phishing tactic happens when you receive an e-mail alerting you that some specific accounts at your bank have been hacked and that yours is among them. Hackers hope that you’ll be so alarmed by this that you’ll never stop to consider that you may actually be transmitting your data straight to the hackers themselves. The best rule of thumb to consider is that valid companies will never require you to submit a password, bank account information or credit card number in order to ensure that your data is secure. If you have doubts, navigate away from the website immediately.

Although the Internet offers a wealth of information and benefits, the reality is that it also comes with a host of potential threats. However, by simply taking a bit of time to educate yourself about possible security hazards, you are already taking a big, efective step towards increasing your amount of safety online.

Viruses are one of the most common online hazards, and since they can come in a variety of formats, they can be particularly hard to spot. You can bring a virus onto your computer by doing something as seemingly harmless as visiting an infected website, or downloading a file that is attached to an e-mail in your inbox. Because of the fact that hackers are constantly developing new and more advanced computer viruses that are prevalent throughout the Internet, it is worthwhile to invest in a reliable anti-virus program that will continually scan your computer and monitor the websites you visit to alert you about any questionable material. Although viruses are small, they can be very destructive.

Unlike viruses, which usually try to replicate themselves in order to efficiently spread across the Internet, spyware applications prey on people who bring the spyware onto their machine thanks to a mistakenly downloaded file which is often bundled alongside another application that the user frequents. Some spyware is characterized by an endless stream of pop-up windows that disguise themselves as reputable Internet advertisements. In reality, the aim of most spyware efforts is to sift through your computer’s data in search of private information, and to take control of your web browser. Some spyware can be extremely hard to uninstall and often requires professional expertise.

Although viruses and spyware can seriously diminish your online security, the easiest way to protect yourself is to install anti-virus and anti-spyware software, so that they can be handled appropriately before they do any permanent damage to your computer.

If you use the Internet and have adopted the idea that you don’t have to do anything to protect your data and personal information, this is a potentially dangerous assumption. The very nature of the Internet means that information can be spread at an extremely high rate of speed, and to thousands or even millions people at once. When keeping these realities in mind, it is easier to understand why computer hackers feel so empowered to create havoc for people that they will probably never meet face to face.

By doing just a bit of research, hackers have a wealth of ways to steal data and send malicious files across the Internet, often at little or no cost to them. When you consider the potential gains that a hacker could experience after successfully infiltrating your online bank account or e-mail program, it makes sense why it is so crucial to ensure that your computer is properly protected against threats. Those who are most vulnerable to the dangers of hacking and viruses are usually those who have not bothered to install protection on their computer, whether because they don’t feel it is necessary or because they don’t know how to get started.

If you are unsure about how to protect your computer, consider asking a tech-savvy friend for assistance. If this isn’t an option for you, see if there are any large chain-style office supply stores in your area. Often these merchants have a technical support or computer department staffed with employees who are able to help safeguard your computer for a reasonable price.

Even after you have taken the steps to protect your computer properly, use common sense when clicking around the Internet. Many spammers and hackers combine seemingly enticing offers with harmful files. In short, do your best not to download items from people that you don’t know.

Although e-mail can be incredibly convenient, it also can potentially allow a flood of junk e-mail, or “spam” to come flooding into your inbox uninvited. Because this type of e-mail can harbor computer viruses and spyware, it is important to take steps to combat it so that your annoyance level will be kept at bay and your computer will keep running safely. Even if you only send e-mails to people that you know, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be be immune from the effects of spam. The reason for this is that experienced spammers use tools such as automated e-mail generators to help guess combinations of e-mails. Therefore, they don’t necessarily have to know your e-mail address in order to send spam to your inbox.

Furthermore, always take care when filling out any e-mail registration forms, whether you are intending to gain access to a message board, or try your luck by entering a contest. Although most such registration efforts are ultimately harmless, there are still other entities that will willingly sell their e-mail lists to marketers in return for a handsome profit. If you are on such an e-mail list, you may soon find that your inbox becomes littered with spam.

Finally, many current e-mail programs such as Gmail and Yahoo have spam filters that sort out the junk from the important messages, without you having to even click your mouse. That said, these programs aren’t perfect. If you are expecting an e-mail from someone, yet you’ve failed to receive it, always check your spam filter to make sure that it hasn’t been sent there. Most programs allow you to add certain addresses to your “white list,” effectively telling your e-mail program that the address is not spam and should never be placed in your spam folder.

Social media websites provide an excellent way to stay in touch with friends or reunite with those who you have known in the past. However, many people seem to forget that even details that they post to friends on websites such as Facebook may be visible to many more people than this those in a friends list. In order to keep your details secure and make sure that only the data you want to display is shown, it is well worth exploring any applicable security setitings.

Although you can usually change settings so that only friends will see changes such as your status updates, remember that the default setting is often so that your activity updates can be seen across the Internet. Since your friends can “tag” photos that they have taken of you, it is likely that at some point you may notice that there are some less-than-attractive shots of you floating around the Internet for all to see. Keep your personal privacy in mind by setting your security settings to appropriate levels and specifically asking people to remove photos of you that are unappealing. Although this does not always result in the photos being removed, it is always worth trying to be upfront and honest about your feelings.

Even if you have tweaked your settings in such a way that your activities are only accessible to people that you have specified, always remember that your words may have unwanted repercussions. Refrain from insulting others, or posting updates when you are intoxicated or emotional. Thanks to the use of screen captures and mobie data feeds, you can never assume that your updates are only being released to a select audience.

Finally, think carefully before broadcasting your plans through social media websites, especially in the event of going on vacation. Although it may seem tempting to broadcast your excitement about your upcoming Jamaican vacation, it also lets others know when your house will be unoccupied.

Many people would readily admit that their world is dominated by hectic schedules, and a lifestyle that craves efficiency and convenience. Therefore, it is easy to understand why more and more people are turning to online travel booking websites to help plan their vacations. In years past, many people were heavily reliant upon travel agents to help with their travel needs. Now, an ever increasing array of travel websites allow even the most timid Internet users to book their own trip with ease and speed. However, with that comes the risk of potentially offering your personal information and payment details to a website or company that ultimately turns out to be a scam. There are a few things you can do to help ensure that your vacation planning needs or met without being fooled by such unscrupulous companies.

The nature of traveling often means that you will be required to invest not only time, but money into your vacation. Therefore, always ensure that the travel website you have chosen is secure before submitting your payment details. The easiest way you can do this is to verify that the address of the payment page begins with “https://”. This indicates that your data will be transmitted over a secure connection. Also, look down in the bottom corner of your web browser to locate a gold padlock icon. This also indicates a secure webpage. If you will be paying an individual rather than a company, see if you can arrange to pay through a service such as PayPal so that the payment can proceed without you have to provide a lot of personal details.

Finally, once the vacation has been booked, watch your bank account balance carefully to make sure that all charges come across as expected. If they do not, notifiy your bank immediately so that an investigation can be made.

A lot of people enjoy playing online games, but they can end up on sites that aren’t reputable and leave their computer unprotected if they aren’t paying close attention to what they’re doing. Don’t fall victim to that. There are better ways to handle your affairs online, whether you’re doing something important or just having a little bit of fun. You might not want to worry about hackers or other problems, but those kinds of things are out there for you to deal with, even if you try to ignore them. You can avoid them much more easily by taking a few simple precautions.

First, don’t visit sites that aren’t safe or give your information to sites you don’t know much about. Check them out. You can find plenty of online casino games and other things to play that are entirely safe and that are a lot of fun. Your information will be protected and won’t be stolen by anyone, and you can just relax and enjoy the site. There’s more you should do to protect yourself on other sites, though, like making sure you have anti-virus software installed on your computer.

Many people don’t bother with that kind of software, because they think that it’s really not necessary. They just shrug it off and assume that they don’t visit any sites that could get them into trouble. In truth, it’s not the sites that you visit in most cases. It’s the fact that you’re on the Internet at all that’s the problem. There are plenty of people who don’t realize that, and then they don’t understand why there’s such a serious problem with their computer and their information. Don’t get involved with that kind of problem. Just protect your computer with any of the popular anti-virus options so you can have peace of mind.

Protecting your computer, or more importantly the data contained within, is a very important aspect of daily computing. The first and most important aspect of securing your computer is physical access. If you can deny physical access to your computer, you make things quite a bit harder on would be thieves. Sadly, this can be very hard for the average user, and even in fairly secure corporate situations, there are ways to use social engineering to get around most security measures to gain physical access to machines on premises. So unless you can find a way to build your computer into a safe, the next best line of defense is to use good passwords and encryption to keep data out of the wrong hands.

With encryption there are two methods you can take: file and folder, or whole disk. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. File and folder level encryption uses a separate password from your system login. This makes it a bit more work to access, but adds one more password for a thief to crack. These files have to be decrypted to access and change, and then have to be re-encrypted when you’re done. Whole disk encryption generally relies on the system password you log in with, allowing access to your files only to someone who has that password.

Neither of those methods is worth anything if you don’t have a good password that only you know. A truly good password is something that uses mixed case, numbers, and special characters, all random. The longer the better, and generally no less than eight characters, though 11 for a minimum is better. All passwords for the different accounts you have online should be different as well, because if you use the same password in one place and it gets figured out, it will give free access to the thief to any other sites you use that have the same password.

The Internet has really made an impact on people’s lives. It has become such an important part of their lives that people rarely give a second thought to their privacy. They share personal information, their real names and fill out forms without even thinking about where it is going or who is getting the information. The problem is that there are a lot of people on the Internet that are looking to use your personal information for their gain. Luckily, there are many things that you can do to make sure that you keep your online activities private.

The first thing you can do to make sure that your online activities are private is to delete all history and cache files. Anyone who has access to your computer can view all the websites that you visited and what you did on those sites. With just a few clicks of the mouse you can delete your browser’s internet history and prevent people from gaining access to this type of information. To clear the internet history with Internet Explorer click Internet Tools at the top of the screen and then choose Preferences and Clear Internet History.

The second thing you can do to make sure that your online activities are kept private is to make sure that you are sending emails and contact forms that are encrypted. Encryption takes the information that you are sending and scrambles it. The only person that can view the unscrambled version of the information is the intended recipient. Encryption of materials is so popular that it has become a basic feature on most websites. Almost all email servers provide encrypted emails and websites that are encrypted show a tiny little lock at the bottom right of the screen that notifies computer users that their information is being encrypted.

No longer thought of as an option reserved for people who are single and desperate, online dating can offer a refreshing change for those who are tired of their local bar scene or the standard ways of trying to find a suitable companion. In fact, many people say that they like online dating because its very format encourages in-depth conversations that help people get to know one another in a way that is not always possible when meeting in a loud or crowded place such as a bar. However, along with the vast amount of options in the world of online dating also comes potential security threats. However, rest assured that there are several things you can do to help keep your online persona and data secure as you explore this new dating arena.

If you are accessing your preferred dating website in a public place, take care to clear the cookies and history from the web browser before leaving the computer. By doing this, you are effectively wiping clean any evidence of where you’ve been online. Although the majority of users after you will probably have only the purest of intentions, you can never be too careful. Not only could you face intense humiliation in the event that someone decides to impersonate you on a dating website, but you could also give that person access to your personal information.

Even when you take the plunge and decide to meet someone in person after chatting with them on a website, it is very important that they do not know your home address at this stage. To be safe, arrange to meet the person at a public place such as a coffee shop. Finally, when you are deciding what information to divulge when creating the “About Me” section of your dating website profile, always try to keep an element of mystery and remember that anything you type could potentially be seen by millions of people worldwide.

For many people, Skype is considered to be an almost revolutionary tool since it allows people to conduct free Internet video chats with friends and family from across the world. It has become even more popular since many laptop computers now come with webcams already installed. Even if a user does not have access to video functionality, they can still have an audio chat with others. Although Skype does much to help people stay in touch with their loved ones regardless of physical proximity, if you choose to use the program, there are still some considerations that you should keep in mind so that your privacy is protected during Skype chats.

Although Skype does have effective privacy settings that can be tweaked in accordance with your desires, if you are a new user of Skype, you will want to make sure that you take a look at these settings first. Otherwise, millions of people could potentially contact you, looking for a chat, or other sort of attention that you may not be willing to give.

After you have been using Skype for a while, you may find that you prefer to only be accessible to a specific group of fellow Skype users. On the other hand, you may be among the many Skype users whose goal is to make new friends, and therefore perfectly willing to strike up an online conversation with a complete stranger. Whatever the case may be, the Skype preferences do allow you to easily block users that you’d rather ignore. So that you won’t be at risk of potentially offending them, you will simply appear to be offline to any users whom you have blocked.

Fortunately, it is easy to remove users from your list of blocked user names, so that it’s very easy to simply take a break from someone and allow them to enjoy the pleasure of your conversation at a later time.

Viruses, spyware and adware are malicious software programs that can come from virtually any website on the Internet. If you have a computer that is hooked up to the Internet, then you run the risk of downloading any of the three malicious software programs. To prevent yourself from falling victim to a number of malicious software, it is recommended that every computer user have some type of anti-virus protection on their computer. Here is a look at some useful and free anti-virus programs that any PC user can download.

Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft Security Essentials is put out directly from Microsoft. It is completely free to download for both personal and professional use and you can download it on as many computers as you wish. Microsoft Security Essentials is a small sized download that will run on any PC computer. It will track any known viruses or spyware programs that might be on your computer. The downside to Microsoft Security Essentials is that it requires you to manually run the scan. It does not offer real-time scanning.

AVG Free. AVG Free has been cited by technology experts as the top of the line free anti-virus program. It offers hundreds of free features that other anti-virus programs do not. AVG Free comes with email scanners, firewalls, malware protect and real-time scanning protection. AVG Free is the closest you will get to a professional paid anti-virus system.

Panda Cloud AntiVirus. Panda Cloud Anti-Virus is only available for computer users when they are on the Internet. With Panda Cloud there is no need to have to download a large program; it runs strictly off of the Internet. All virus and malware updates are done through the Internet so every time you run a scan of Panda Cloud you have up to the date virus definitions and are scanning for current issues.

The Internet can be a fantastic place to meet people from all over the world, yet just because the amount of people you can reach is virtually unlimited, this doesn’t mean you should ignore some of the same safety concerns that you would keep on mind if you were meeting someone in person.

The very pace of an Internet chat room can feel intimidating to some. At first glance, it seems like a whirlwind of exchanged data and text that can often be very hard to keep track of. However, it can also be one of the easiest ways to find other people who share your views. This is especially true if you have very specific interests or need advice from people who have been through situations similar to your own. Like chat rooms, Internet message board forums can be very helpful in obtaining a concensus aboout something, whether it is something as simple as what pair of shoes would go best with a particular style of dress, or something more serious like where to turn for assistance with helping a loved one cope with a cancer diagnosis.

However, even though the information you can obtain is endless, that doesn’t mean you should start sharing your most personal details with everyone you meet. Just as you would when meeting someone face to face, use proper judgement. Usually, there is no harm in giving someone your first name, as you might if you were signing off on a message board post, but strongly consider the benefits and pitfalls of giving someone your street address, or even the town you live in, unless you have known them for quite some time and feel truly comfortable with the exchange.

Feel free to explore the wealth of data that the Internet can offer, and exchange ideas in the fast paced environment that the medium is known for, but always keep your personal safety in mind.

It is recommended that in order to have maximum computer protection you should download and install a good anti-virus program. With over a hundred different anti-virus programs on the market it can be hard to separate which ones are good and which ones are bad. However, if you know which features to look for in an anti-virus program you will be able to separate the good from the bad. Here is a look at some of the features that distinguish the good from the bad when it comes to anti-virus programs.

Real Time Scanning. There is constant internet activity and you need to have an anti-virus program that will keep up with your internet activities. A real time scanning system will catch any malicious software or websites you visit the minute that you visit them. This real time scanning can be the difference between downloading hundreds of viruses and stopping them in their tracks.

Anti-Spyware Protection. A lot of anti-virus programs will only look out for viruses and trojans; they will not scan for spyware and adware. Spyware and adware can be just as destructive to your computer as any other type of virus. For maximum protection it is a good idea to have an anti-virus program that will also look for anti-spyware.

Firewalls. Most anti-virus programs come with firewalls that prevent outsides from breaching your computer network and gaining access to your private information. A decent anti-virus program will come complete with either a single firewall or a two-way firewall.

Search Engine Safety. A lot of malicious software will be downloaded from a computer user clicking a random link on a search engine. Newer, up-to-date anti-virus programs will show a stop light on the side of the site so that users know which sites are safe to visit and which are not.

Regardless of the amount of time that you spend online, the reality is that hackers pose a very realistic threat to your security and private data. Hackers can be very dangerous if they are working alone, and that danger can be compounded when hackers team up to achieve a common goal. This was evidenced during the recent takedown of the online payment website PayPal, in support of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. However, fortunately, it’s not as hard as you may think to protect yourself from potential hacker-related damage.

The first rule of thumb is to use common sense. If you are accessing a public computer terminal or open wireless “hotspot” connection, it’s not a good idea to transmit secure data in these situations. Also, take care to install anti-virus software on your computer, and keep it updated so that you are secure against the latest threats. Many anti-virus software manufacturers have developed programs that can perform periodic updates at a time that you specify so that you never have to worry about being disturbed during your online activities. Although most anti-virus programs can run quietly in the background in a way that is virtually unnoticable to the user, if you have an older computer, you may notice that your computer runs a bit slower when the anti-virus software is running system checks.

Also, keep in mind that your firewall needs to be kept updated regularly as well. Essentially, the firewall is programmed in such a way to only let certain programs have access to your computer, while keeping the others (that could potentially be harmful) out. Some computers already have a firewall installed on them right out of the box, while others may require that secondary firewall software be installed and activated by the user. Although, since such programs are relatively inexpensive, yet quite effective, they are usually well worth the money spent.

With the proper care of the computer hardware, your computer can essentially last a number of years. By practicing proper computer hardware care and maintenance you will be able to prolong the life of various components of the computer such as the monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers. If you are looking for ways to prolong the lifespan of your computer hardware, here are some tips that you can do to make sure the products last for years to come.

Mouse Care. Your computer mouse endures a lot. You use it every time that you use the computer. However, you must make sure that you take care of it. Make sure that you do not drop it or bang it against items. If you use a ball mouse make sure that you remove the ball and clean out the dust that can build up.

Speaker Care. Speakers can easily overheat. Make sure that you keep your speakers away from heat sources and that they are properly placed away from the computer. It is a good idea to check how close the speakers are to the edge of the desk. Another thing to remember when using speakers is to make sure that you keep the volume at mid level as the speakers will wear out if you play them at the highest level possible.

Keyboard Care. Keyboards are another piece of computer hardware that is used daily. To prolong the life of the keyboard, make sure that you tap the keys lightly when typing. Many people bang on the keys which can cause damage. Keyboards will also need to be cleaned of dirt and debris. Lightly wipe between the keys and use compressed air to get rid of all dust and tiny particles.

Monitor Care. Monitors need proper care also. Make sure you clean the screen and turn off the monitor when you are not using it. This will prolong the lifespan of the monitor.

Do you really need anti-virus software? The answer to this question is a simple “yes.” Anti-virus software will prevent your computer from becoming infected by malicious files in most cases. This is essential to having a computer that runs free of errors and keeping your information secure. Many anti-virus programs will attach themselves to your search results and warn you of any page that may be infected. This can save you tons of time because you won’t have to worry as much when you are surfing online.

One major complaint of anti-virus software is that it increases your computer’s startup time and that it slows down the entire performance of your computer. While this may have been the case in the past, dual core computers and better software programs have counteracted this fact with a faster processor that can do multiple things at once. So using the slower runtime as an excuse is no longer viable. You will be running as fast as ever when you install anti-virus software.

Others argue that it costs too much money for good anti-virus software because it is often subscription based and requires lots of upgrades and patches. This is also no longer the case because you can find good anti-virus software from the open source community. Many of these programs also receive regular updates, so you don’t have to worry about being unprotected. The bigger names in ant-virus protection have also lowered their fees in an effort to compete with the products that are offered for free. You can use free trials, too.

If you do not have anti-virus software installed on your computer, you need to do some research and pick one that will suit your needs. Microsoft Security Essentials is good, but it is still necessary to have a standalone anti-virus product. Don’t leave your computer unprotected. It might cause you more headache than it’s worth.

Whether you browse the Internet regularly, or are only a casual user, it is important to keep your browser settings customized to reflect your usage habits, and also protect your privacy. Mozilla Firefox is one of the most popular web browsers available today. Many people choose it because it is not only fast and stable but also free to download, and easy to install. Let’s go over some of the main functionality of the browser that can help you stay secure as you navigate through your favorite Internet websites.

Firefox has a private browsing feature which allows your web surfing habits to be hidden from others who may use the computer after you. It is especially useful if you share a computer with family members or are using the Internet at a public termina location such as a library. When using this function, the browser will not store information including lists of visited websites, downloaded files, form data, or cookies.

Regardless of whether you choose to use this feature, it is a good idea to get into the habit of clearing your browser’s history after each time you use the computer, or at least daily. It will help your browser to load pages faster and will also help to keep your Internet activity shielded from others. You can do this by clicking the “Tools” option at the top of the web browser window. Click the “Clear Recent History” option and then adjust the settings and file type options to fit your needs.

Form data is another thing that can be cleared from Firefox. Because sensitive information such as credit card information and passwords can sometimes qualify for this category, it is easy to understand why you don’t want to let this sort of data linger in Firefox’s cached data for any extended periods of time.

When you are considering which internet resources would be helpful to your business, don’t rule out anything until you have at least done a little research on it. You may be surprised at the internet resources that are out there that can really make a difference.

One of the most popular internet resources is social networking sites. You may not consider such sites as true venues for promoting your business because, after all, aren’t they mainly designed for personal contact and communication?

Think about this. Back in the “old days,” what was the main source of advertising? Word of mouth, of course. Social networks work in the same way, although the word is now typed rather than spoken.

Other Internet resources can include those websites that give you access to survey tools. Some of them may allow you to download these directly from the website, while others provide the software that you need to download them. Either way, you have access to one of the best ways to obtain customer feedback quickly so you can make any needed improvements.

Survey tools are just one example of the internet resources that you can use to communicate with current customers or attract new ones. Customer service and customer acquisition tools are also available, both of which can give you better insight into what your customers want and need.

Consider search engine optimization, too. Is your present method ensuring that your business information is very visible? If not, look into ways to make it more attractive or to move it further up on search engine pages. Any or all of these, as well as others, will easily fit into your current business plan. Once implemented, they will bring results in terms of increasing your customer base or clientele, as well as other ways.

Social networking sites are a lot of fun. If you are part of the Facebook community, then you already know how great it is to reconnect with old friends, find new businesses, market your own business and keep up with the daily happenings of everyone in your network. Social networking, especially Facebook, has changed the way the world works. It’s also added a new level of danger to everyday life. If you are part of Facebook and enjoy the benefits that come from the community, it’s important that you set the right privacy settings. Check out the list of crucial security measures you should take on Facebook.

Search settings: You can set who can find you on Facebook. Decide who can see what kind of information about you. You can set this privacy feature to show nothing but your name, or to show more information.

Public search: The public search is another area of privacy and security you can control. In this section, you set the setting to control if you show up on Google. If you don’t want your profile to show up on Google, then set the right settings.

Photos: You can also protect your photos. You can decide who sees your photos, including those photos where someone else tags you. In addition, you can set privacy settings on each of your photo albums. Each album does not have to have the same setting.

Wall: You’ll want to select settings for who is allowed to see your wall and who can post to your wall. If you only want your friends posting to your wall, make sure to click the right box.

Newsfeed. You can also control the newsfeed. You decide what you want to show on other people’s newsfeed.

Facebook is a wonderful tool. Just be sure to use it responsibly and keep your private information secure.

The Internet is a fantastic place to communicate with people from all over the world. It can also provide a great level of convenience because there are websites available to buy everything from groceries to jewelry, books to concert tickets, all without leaving your house. However, it is important to always use common sense whenever you are connected to the Internet. It can be very exciting to know that you can theoretically have access to millions of people every time you go online. But, always remember that not all those people will have pure intentions, so it is necessary to protect yourself whenever you are online.

For starters, be careful what sort of information you tell about yourself online, especially if you are using social networking websites, message boards or chat rooms. Although you may think you have a good idea of who you are conversing with online, the beauty and hazard of online communication is that anyone can say whatever they’d like about themselves in a way that is very difficult for others to verify. Ideally, you should only use your first name until you have been having regular online conversations with someone for quite some time, and only release more information if you feel safe.

When shopping online, always make sure that you are only entering payment information on websites that are secure. These can be identified with a beginning address portion that reads “https:” and they may also have a padlock icon in the corner of the website browser. Many online websites such as Paypal allow you to provide your payment information to a website that can guarantee its level of security instead of the merchant itself. If you are uneasy about shopping online, seek out such websites in order to provide yourself with some peace of mind.

There was once a time when a firewall was guaranteed to be an expensive proposition for you. Firewall software was pricey to initially purchase (and license for all of the computers you wanted to use it on), and they charged you for updates through their monthly charges. However, those days have mostly ended, as those silly programs are being steadily replaced by equally good, completely free alternatives to them. Zone Alarm is one of the better of those free alternatives out right now. Of course, it does allow you to pay money to upgrade your level of protection, but what it provides can easily be combined with other free programs for a full suite of protection from just about every kind of harm that might befall your computer.

Zone Alarm tells you the activity level of your computer’s Internet connection at all times. It also logs this information in case you would like to review it later on. Like most firewalls, it prohibits websites and other potential threats from sending malware to you through their cookies and such. But Zone Alarm goes a step further than that by allowing you to remain protected from websites by simply blocking you from getting to them altogether. The best way to not be hurt by something is to avoid it entirely, after all.

In addition to that, Zone Alarm does not require you to use an “all or nothing” mindset for your connections. While you would certainly want to use the high security level for the Internet (so that you can connect to other computers, but no one else can connect to you), you still have the capacity to share more openly with other computes on what Zone Alarm calls your trusted network. After all, you should know what is going on in your own LAN. If you cannot trust your own network, you have problems beyond what a firewall can help you with.

No matter what sort of career you have, or what you like to do in your free time, there’s a good chance that you’ll have to use a computer to access the Internet at least occasionally. This can seem a bit intimidating, especially if you are of an age where you did not grow up using computers. However, you’ll likely find that computers are fairly simple to use. That said, there are still some safeguards you should keep in mind in order to protect your personal safety when you are online.

For starters, choose passwords that are unique to you and that would be hard for others to guess. Also make sure that your password is not a part of your e-mail or user name, and vice versa. The best passwords incorporate a combination of both uppercase and lowercase letters, and perhaps a symbol or number to make them even more complex. Some web browsers have functionality that allows users to store passwords in the browser’s memory so that they do not have to be typed out on each visit. Although this seems convenient, it is actually not a good habit to get into because in theory, it could allow an unwanted person to get access to your data without having to type anything into the fields on their own.

Also, try to remember to periodically clear our your browsing history, cookies and temporary Internet files. Not to be confused with your favorite places or bookmarked sites. most of the abovementioned files are those that are collected without your conscious knowledge as you browse the Internet. By deleting the files, you will be protecting your privacy online, and also helping your browser to load pages faster.

Finally, consider putting your whole computer under password protection, so that a specific word or phrase must be typed to gain access to the computer and its contents.

Since the days of MSDOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) all the way up to the current operating systems, sound has been a means of enhancing various tasks. Gaming and music as well as file sharing these files with software like ares p2p likely caused the initial push, but once they became a bit more commonplace, and computers became more powerful, using sound to enhance aspects of the operating system itself became common. These days, not having sound would be cause for concern.

Back in the 80’s, computers only made rudimentary beeps, though some software was programmed cleverly to take control of the built in speaker and make more noises than intended, but this was rare. Buying an add-in card and configuring it was the only way to add fuller and richer sound to games and applications. Some of these add in cards could also perform some of the functions of modems, or had CD-ROM drive controllers built in to improve the multimedia capability of the machine.

In the late 90’s, sound acceleration hardware became cheap enough that it began to appear built into computers. Generally these offerings were by far inferior to any add in card you could buy, but for the basic user, they were more than enough to provide the basic multimedia needs of the sounds the OS could make, along with the music embedded in webpages, playing tunes with players like aresgalaxy or for CD playback. If you wanted a fuller and richer experience for DVD movie playback or directional audio for gaming, you still had to buy a separate card.

Now you can buy a motherboard with perfectly viable multi-position audio capability built right into the motherboard. The only reason to buy a 3rd party audio card is for specific features that the onboard may lack, or if you compose/master music with your PC, at which point you would be looking at high end professional audio sound cards that offer multi channel inputs, high signal to noise ratios, and high bit depth digital to analog converters.

Chances are, when you use a computer, you will be accessing some websites that require you to register with an e-mail and a password. Some workplaces even ask their employees to keep their computers locked down so that data cannot be compromised when you are away from your desk. As you might imagine, it is very important to choose your passwords wisely. Failure to do so could lead hackers to sensitive data such as your bank account, e-mail program, or personal pictures.

Some websites set parameters for passwords, such as saying that they must be comprised of a certain number of letters or numbers, or must include a symbol of some sort. Some websites even go further and require their users to use uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and symbols all at the same time. At first thought, you may feel that this does more harm than good, but thankfully the majority of popular websites will allow their users to either reset their passwords or answer a “secret question” (set by the user during the registration process) in order to retrieve their password. Still other options may provide you with a specfic phrase that is intended to help you recall the password.

The most important thing to keep in mind when choosing a password is to mix it up a bit. In other words, don’t use the same phrase or word for every website you visit. Many websites will inform you if your password is “strong enough” to prevent others from guessing it, and if not, will suggest that you alter it in some way. Finally, for obvious reasons, one of the most compelling reasons to use a variety of passwords is that in the event that a hacker is able to figure out one password, they will not have access to all the websites that you visit.

If you connect to the Internet for any purpose, your computer is at risk of getting viruses and being attacked by other kinds of malware, like bots, spyware and adware. It is important that you take steps to protect your computer. Here are some of the steps that you need to take when learning how to protect your PC.

Install an Antivirus Program. If you do not have an antivirus software program, you are asking to be infected. There are both free and commercial versions of antivirus programs with comparable capabilities. AVG Antivirus, Avast Antivirus and Kaspersky Antivirus are just some of the software programs that are available to you for this purpose, so choose a trustworthy antivirus program and install it today.

Update Your Software. Make sure that your antivirus program is set to update regularly in order to combat any new threats that appear. Your antivirus program should handle the virus definition updates and software updates automatically so that there is never a chance for you to become infected when using the Internet on your computer.

Install Trusted Software Only. If you are not sure what a specific piece of software is meant to do based on its name, then you should not be installing it. You should never install a program or software that you do not trust, nor should you install anything that you do not absolutely need because software downloads and other file downloads can carry viruses and malware that can seriously harm your computer.

Avoid File Sharing. P2P or Person 2 Person file sharing programs make it easier than ever to download music, software and other files, but unfortunately these files come from sources that you cannot trust, and as such, they can easily carry malware and viruses without you knowing it. Avoid these types of software programs and websites to keep your computer safe from attacks.

Video is an integral part of owning and operating a computer. Even if you only run a basic text terminal, you still need a means of displaying that text on a screen. This is where a video card (or controller) comes in. Now if all you are running is a basic text terminal, chances are the motherboard you are running will have video built in, which is very likely to be more than enough for the job. Most server motherboards come with built in video, and the majority of motherboard vendors also make models with onboard video. Boards like this are useful for when you don’t need the added cost and space use of a video card, and don’t have need for the added horsepower most third party graphics cards provide.

For machines that might be doing high definition video, 3D gaming, or 3D modeling, higher end graphics cards are a necessity along with software like xvid codec. These cards can sometimes be bought as built in on mid range motherboards, but are usually less powerful variants that can’t do what full-fledged separate graphics cards can. Most will help enable the playback of high definition video on slower CPUs at the least. The more powerful mainstream graphics cards can render very high detail 3D games at high resolutions at very smooth frame rates, allowing for an immersing gaming experience. Slightly more expensive variants of these cards are tailored towards 3D modeling.

They have special built in abilities that accelerate the drawing of the lines, making the working on renders of models and such happen much faster. These cards can also be used for 3D gaming, but generally do not perform quite as well.

It is important to understand what a video card does. What kind of video software, like xvid, will work best for your needs. And of course how to choose the right video card for your needs so that you can ensure that your computer runs right.

Although many people do have access to a personal computer at home or work, the reality is that almost everyone will have to use a public computer terminal, at least from time to time. Public libraries and Internet cafes are popular hangouts for people who just need Internet access for a short while, or who are away from home. Keep in mind that if you don’t use common sense, your personal data can be compromised. However, fortunately, there are several things you can do that work well to protect your data, and are also quite simple to perform.

Ideally, avoid entering sensitive personal data online at all. If you are traveling though, it makes sense that you might need to log onto your bank’s website to check to see how much money you have in your account, so if this is the case, it probably can’t be avoided. Therefore, try to be discreet when typing in your password or user name. You may wish to type with one hand, while using the other to shield the typing hand from the view of others. If there is a checkbox marked “Remember me on this computer” or something similar, make sure that it is unchecked. If the web browser asks you if you want to save the password in the browser’s memory for future use, make sure that you decline. Furthermore, when you view information online, check periodically to make sure that someone is not watching your activity over your shoulder.

Finally, when you are done using the Internet, the first thing you should do is make sure that you log out of any accounts that you have accessed. After you have done that, the next step is to clear your browsing history, cookies and active logins. The exact steps to take will vary by the type of browser that you use, but normally you can do it through your “Tools” or “Preferences” menu.

The Internet is a great resource for learning, communication and exploration. However, by usng the Internet, you can also make yourself vulnerable to receiving computer viruses. Computer viruses can be found by downloading files from the Internet or even by navigating to contaminated websites. Some viruses can be so severe that they put your computer in an unusable state, or require hundreds or even thousands of dollars to repair. Rest assured, though that there are several simple things you can do to help keep your computer safe as you browse the Internet.

One of the most effective, and perhaps obvious safeguards is to install anti-virus software on your machine. Some computers come with such programs already installed, and others require only a minimal investment. Many of the anti-virus programs on the market are able to be periodically updated as new Internet threats are developed.

Also, be careful when downloading file attachments within your e-mail inbox. Some programs such as Yahoo Mail have the capability to scan every message of your inbox before you open it. Sometimes an infected file can even come from someone that you know personally, because viruses can attach to an e-mail without the sender being aware that it is happening. Therefore, ask people to alert you when they are about to send you an e-mail attachment so that you can expect. it. When you are sending out e-mails, help your fellow recipients by using phrases such as “You will find my invoice attached to this e-mail,” and so on, so that the recipients will understand that the file is a legitimate attachment.

Finally, stay abreast of any current computer threats by keeping tabs on technology news. The most severe viruses will usually also be mentioned via the national news. Some companies such as Microsoft may offer downloadable software patches to help their users handle viruses as they arise.

With many of us adopting increasingly busy lifestyles, convenience is highly desirable. Online shopping has done much to simplify the act of getting what we need as efficiently as possible. In the best possible scenario, we can do everything from shopping for groceries to buying that great new outfit, with just a few clicks of a mouse. However, since most online shopping websites require users to enter payment information in order to complete a transaction, it is extremely important to what you can to ensure that a website is reputable and secure before making a purchase.

One of the easiest things to look for is a website address that begins with “https”. The added “s” at the beginning of the web address indicates that the website has a secure connection and you should feel at ease when entering your payment information. Another quick thing to look for is a padlock style icon that appears in the corner of your web browser as you visit a secure website. Although the exact appearance will vary according to the web browser you use, the icon is usually gold in color, and may include a tooltip box that says “This website is secure” when you put your mouse over it.

A website’s reputation is another aspect to consider. Some websites will have a “seal of approval” type logo from organizations such as the Better Business Bureau. Other companies such as Verisign and Paypal allow online merchants to set up shops that are secure right from the very beginning, thanks to a partnership. By using a search engine, you may also be able to find out how long a website has been registered on the Internet, and check the status of their SSL (secure socket layer) certiificate. If the certificate is listed as valid, that is yet another indication that your data is being safely transferred.

The Internet is a wonderful tool that allows us to work, play, and socialize. Research is done quickly and easily online as there are thousands of sources just waiting at our fingertips. With games and social networking sites, it’s fun to find new friends and relax. And the Internet makes it easier to conduct business as well with digital media, FTP via free software from the FileZilla Server and online marketing efforts.

With all the good the Internet does, there are also some negatives. The biggest issue that comes along with the Internet is privacy. Take a look at some steps to keep yourself and your information safe from online predators.

1. Social networking sites. If you are on social networking sites like Facebook, then it’s important to protect your personal information. Never post home addresses, telephone numbers, or other personal identifying information that can be used against you. Thieves troll those social networking sites looking for personal information in order to steal identities.

2. Use anti-virus software. The more time you spend online, the more vulnerable you become to virus attacks. Keep your anti-virus and spyware software up-to-date. You never know where a virus will pop up and the anti-virus software will help keep your files safe.

3. Use password protected Internet. Get your own secure Internet connection. When you use free Internet that isn’t password protected, you risk others being able to see your personal information, like bank account information and email passwords. Keep your personal information away from prying eyes.

The Internet is a wonderful tool that makes life much easier. Just play it safe and follow good sense to keep your information away from thieves and hackers. Always use trusted sites no matter if you are transferring files via FileZilla or downloading files for business. Follow the tips here and also others that you may find in order to keep your information secure. Once your private information gets out to the bad guys, it can take years to repair the damage.

If you browse the Internet frequently, you may already have been the victim of a spyware attack. If you’ve not yet had this unpleasant experience, consider yourself fortunate, and think about taking some simple yet effective preventative measures against spyware. Spyware can be extremely annoying because it can cause advertisements to fill up your computer screen in a constant barrage as you attempt to go to websites. Many spyware attempts come disguised as pop-ups that look very simiar to valid alerts that come across your computer screen during normal usage.

Luckily, many computers come with spyware protection already installed out of the box. Be sure to check to see if this is the case for your own computer before investing in a secondary spyware program. Even if you do need to buy one, the good news is that most are very inexpensive, and some are even free. Also, see if your computer’s firewall is enabled. If it is not, it is usually very simple to fix. If you are a Windows user, you can check your firewall settings through your Control Panel.

Finally, don’t forget that there are several settings within your web browser itself that can help to increase your security online. Although the exact prompts will vary in accordance with the type of browser you are using, after exploring the settings a bit, you should notice that there are many things you can do to customize your online experience. Some examples include blocking popup windows, choosing to accept or reject website cookies and adjusting your overall security settings. Some anti-virus software packages include a feature that examines the content of websites you visit to determine any possible threats. However, if you disagree with the recommendations provided, you can usually override the settings by adding certain websites to your browser’s “trusted sites” list.

Due to the highly mobile nature of today’s society, it is becoming more and more common for people to take their computers on the road with them, whether they are intending to stay in touch while traveling, or just for a change of pace in regards to the work environment. Many companies are capitalizing on this need by offering free wi-fi “hotspots” that allow users to connect to the Internet free of charge. Some cities even have entire downtown areas that boast wi-fi connectivity.

However, it is important to note that such areas usually do not have any sort of security in place to protect the user from any potential hackers. There are a few things that you can do to help safeguard your Internet activity as you browse the Internet in a public place. One of the easiest things you can do right away is ensure that your computer has the proper firewall and virus protection, and that if such software is in place, that it is installed properly, and updated reguarly. Most software offerings offer periodic enhancements so that any emerging viruses or threats are captured before they can cause harm.

Be careful when transmitting or entering any confidential data through public wireless connections. If possible, it should be avoided altogether, but if you must, at least see if there is a way that you can encrypt the data before it is sent. Some e-mail programs such as Microsoft Outlook offer this feature to their users.

Finally, take care to make sure that your wireless access point of choice is legitimate. Sometimes, hackers will set up their own hotspots that appear to be valid but are truly just a way for them to sift through your data. If you are using a wireless point at a place that is staffed with employees, ask them the correct title of the verified hotspot before you connect to it.

Content

If you are wondering if you need anti-virus software, the answer is yes! Anti-virus software is one of the most important steps you can take to protecting your computer and your personal information. Operating a computer without anti-virus software is like leaving your home without locking the door. It just doesn’t make sense to leave your personal information wide open for anyone to come in and take.

Anti-virus software does exactly what it says it will do: it’s anti-virus. That means the software will keep harmful viruses, malware, and spyware from being installed on your computer. These viruses can attack your computer, leaving you with a dead hard drive, no files, and your personal information available to the world. Anti-virus software helps to protect your computer from these attacks. The software watches for any kind of attack on your machine and then keeps it out. The software also does periodic checks to make sure nothing has found its way on to your machine.

Anti-virus software is also useful in protecting your personal information, like passwords. If you do any kind of banking online or online bill paying, then you are going to need to have anti-virus software. If you use a computer without protection, all of your sensitive data like your bank account number, social security number and passwords are left open for thieves to take. Once that kind of information is out, it’s very difficult and time consuming to repair the damage.

Take the necessary precautions you need to keep your computer safe from viruses. Installing anti-virus software is one of the best things you can do to keep your computer safe and free from attacks. Don’t leave your precious information to chance. Install some anti-virus software today. It’s the best decision you’ll ever make when it comes to your computer.

Antivirus softwares have become a necessity for every computer connected to the internet or not. Viruses have found innovative ways to penetrate computers and make living hell for computer users. Having a problem free computer is a dream of many people who cannot think about installing antivirus software. To choose antivirus software it takes a professional. A professional can suggest you antivirus software based upon your needs so that you can use computer normally as you do. Antivirus software keeps improving year after year. One year a company manufactures a really great antivirus, but the next year it fails to improve on its antivirus and another company makes a better antivirus.
The best antivirus for the year 2010 is a debate that will keep going on, but many users and critics have voted Shield Deluxe 2011 as the best antivirus. This antivirus was born from the earlier best seller BitDefender. It is also one of the largest computer protectors in the world with uses over 10 million currently trusting this one software. This costs less and comes with intelligent scanning and other features such as stealth browsing. It has the ability to compile a list of trusted applications. It also monitors activity of various applications in real time and has total control over changes in the windows file system. It also removes viruses and spywares completely so that they do not slow down the computer. IT also has automatic website blocking where untrusted sites are blocked. It can flex its updates times based on the load on the system. This small feature helps gamers and video streamers in a huge way by giving uninterrupted enjoyment. It also has many advanced email, instant messaging and many computer maintenance tools that help in improving the speed of the computer. The best part about this is that it comes with technical support for the entire period of use unlike other companies which charge extra for providing technical assistance.

Have you ever wondered how spammers send thousands of mails? Have you ever felt the need to play pranks with your friends? There is a technique that these spanners use to fake send prank emails. One of the most used ways of sending forged emails over the internet is by using SMTP servers. These SMPT servers need to be running on another domain’s ISP address. But emails clients have learned to reject mails that originate from these kinds of sources, hence it email forgers have opted for different ways to send spam mails. There are many websites that promise to send fake emails to remote addresses but they never work because of being detected as soon as the website begins.
The best way that spammers use is to use a SMTP server of their own. SMTP servers is a unpretentious software that can be installed in any computer for effectively using it to send softwares as anonymous to multiple email addresses. After installing a SMTP server, it has to be configured so that it is able to send mails the way required. The IP address and the port number have to be fed. A few SMTP server softwares have all these preconfigured, but is you want it to work the way you want, then you will have to get your fingers dirty. And since SMTP is a dos based command software, you will have to know very little basics of Dos. But even then you can play with it and learn from the millions of instructions available on the internet. Now is the part where the SMTP server is connected to the computer. You will have to enter the similar addresses you entered before in the manner that it can read. Now from here you can begin the program from where it becomes a little easier to handle.

Usage of internet is increasing and with that internet protection issues are on rise. Theft identity and repercussions of risky online behavior affects the protection and security. To help individuals of all ages stay safe online, and for safe browsing avoiding spyware and viruses, some protection tips are advised.

While browsing internet use Firefox than Microsoft Internet Explorer. Firefox is much more secure and it has the ability to use plug-ins. Secondly, antivirus software should be installed in your computer. It will catch all the viruses big or small and will make your computer run faster. Like the viruses, spyware also should be blocked. Some spyware can copy your personal data and passwords while browsing and may slow down your computer. So anti-virus programs can be used to remove these unnecessary programs from affecting your personal computer. Always back up your data for protection purposes. One day if you see your hardware is damaged and you lose your emails and other important documents, you can easily retrieve if it is saved in a CD or a USB.

Another thing to look at from a business point of view is how to ensure you are safe while providing your employees with options like networking or working from home using a program like Tight VNC. Make sure you have the highest of security in place on all workstations when you are using Putty to do terminal emulation and access other computers. If you are not providing security then you might open your system up for hackers.

Other general things kept in mind while surfing is, when you use social networking sites always make sure you are connected with trust worthy people. If you want you can create different profiles for family, friends and office colleagues. Frequently change your passwords and make sure that they are hard to guess. Do not use personal accounts or bank accounts on a public computer and if surfing is done in a public computer, be sure to log out of every session rather then just closing the window. Never reply to any spam messages if they are received in your mails. Replying to spam is a way of confirming your address and data and it will open to many other websites which are not secure and there is a chance of your computer gets virus affected.

We can see that the number of internet user’s increases and kids are the ones to use more for their projects and homework or for collaborating with their class mates. Online privacy becomes necessary while browsing and using internet. There are several measures taken to make sure that your privacy is maintained when you are online. The first and foremost step is to check whether the web page you are surfing is a secured one or not. Do not provide any kind of personal information about yourself such as name, address, contact number etc.
Privacy statements are the most effective tools you can use to protect yourself while online. There are four basic elements in the privacy statement. First one is “notice”, the web page you use should mention clearly how they are going to use your private information. Second one is “choice”, the website should allow you to choose whether they can collect and use your information. Next element is”access”, website should allow you to access your private information if any inaccuracy occur. “Security” is another element which all the web pages have to keep up to protect your information from loss and misuse. The Web Pages should also include privacy policies about how they are going to deal with our information. Do make sure to read out this privacy policy before agreeing it to any kind of statement. Reject unnecessary cookies while browsing and try to delete your cache memory at regular intervals. The web page can also give out registration process to enter information. Some websites also use seals such as privacy seal, security seal, and vulnerability seals. These seals give an idea about the web page you are dealing with thus helping you to keep your private information to yourself. In case of kid’s privacy, parental control software’s can be included and they can be taught not to share any kind of info with anybody whom they don’t know personally.

Anytime when the data is transmitted in your computer you can see how the data is being routed to different servers. When you type your passwords or your bank account details the process is repeated. The transmission of the data what we send occurs in plain text that means anyone can read it and it traverses many servers to reach destination. The only solution to this problem is to encrypt the data for transmission. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) was created for this purpose. SSL uses a complex key exchange between the server and the destination while transmitting data to make it into an encrypted form. A website containing active SSL session is what we mean when we say a web page is secure. To check the page is secured or not, see the URL when you type a website. If the website is traversed to other pages whose web address starts with “http”, then it is not a secure one, while if the page starts with URL “https” then it is surely a secured web page. Note the difference of’ a in the URL, it will get you out of this page security confusion.

Another way to check the security of the page is to see whether there is a “lock” symbol on the right side of URL. This lock symbol keeps you aware about the security and double clicking on this icon will give you all the security details about the web page. Other indicators of a secured web page are high visibility. From high visibility we mean the web page can be found out easily for the customer. Verification Functionality means there will be some sort of seal which will be verified by clicking mouse over it and it will display all the contents of the page. Thus you can make sure if the web page is secured or not.

When people think about viruses, the only thing that comes to their mind is Windows based computer. They are not wrong to connect viruses to Windows based operating systems, but viruses are also found for other operating systems like Mac OS X and Linux based Operating systems. The problem when one faces while dealing with viruses is that these viruses come in different kinds with disguises that look like important system software. Hence it becomes impossible to save one self from viruses without knowing the different types. Of course you could install different antivirus that could do half the work for you, but you need to have a basic knowledge about the kinds of Viruses that use ingenious and sometime stupid means to infect computers.

One of the most common viruses are the Resident Viruses which make a permanent home in side the computer’s RAM. After making itself home here, it begins executing various programs in the system that corrupt system files and other processes. A few examples of these viruses are the CMJ, MrKlunky and Randex.

Direct action viruses are viruses that do not cause problems unless made to. These viruses take action only when a few conditions are fulfilled and only then it begins to replicate. This virus specifically target the AUTOEXE.BAT files in the Windows C drive. These are important system files that carry out functions when the system is begun.

Over write virus are the major causes of system crashes. These viruses completely wipe off information in the files which they infect, thereby making it un-recoverable. A few examples of these viruses are Trivial 88.D and Trj.Reboot. These are different from Boot viruses that affect the hard disk’s boot sector. Some examples of boot viruses are the AntiExe and the Polyboot.B files. Other viruses such as macro Virus disguise themselves as viruses that infect certain application macros.

Emails hold valuable details pertaining to personal information, business transactions, bank statement and even family and private pictures which are in no way meant for strangers. Hence emails now hold huge importance in peoples lives. Many websites require email addresses to be used as usernames, if a person loses his password, the website gives the option to reset the password by going into the mail. If a fraudster or a criminal finds this password, he can use it to get access to as many other accounts as he wants if he gets access to you mail.

The main reason for people getting their email hacked is because they do not know how to protect their email addresses. It is not because of hacking that most people lose their accounts, but because of trapping. People are fooled into giving up their passwords themselves to hackers. One of the main methods of doing this is by spoofing a website that misleads the user to give up important details regarding the passwords by creating fake log in pages. These pages are just like the original design but differ in one fact that they copy your passwords. They might even lead to the genuine site alter, which lets the user never know that he just gave his username and password to hackers. Hence remember to keep in mind to never enter into your email address from other sites. Instead of doings so, you can go to the site directly by typing in the email address. Another method is by using key loggers that memorizing every thing that you enter into the computer. Key loggers is the easiest method of stealing passwords that is employed in public computers and such. Another huge mistake people do is to use passwords such as “123456″, “password” and many such common passwords that can be easily found out by hackers.

AS of late you might have hear a lot about Denial of Service attacks being undertaken on sites which have stopped serving to Wikileaks. Sites such as Visa, Master card and other banking sites have been crashed because of these attacks. Hackers from around the world are joining forces against the companies who deny service to Wikileaks. The websites of these companies have been attacked. Not just these sites, but also Wikileaks has been under extreme pressure from denial of service attacks from government funded agencies.

So what is a Denial of Service Attack or DoS? A DoS is something any person can undertake on a website and make the system slow of making it unstable. This is done by overloading resources and requests to the extent that the system is not able to serve other legitimate requests and falls under the continuous intense pressure. The machines can not take the intense load for long and end up bending to the demands of the hacker and halting itself. There are three types of Denial of Service attacks. One is the bandwidth attacks which targets the internet connections of the website. The other is the protocol attacks where the website is pushed to its limits and the last one is the logic attacks where the website is sent loads of requests that take considerable resources to be rejected. A single machine is not enough to attack a big websites. TO get over this a hacker will take over several machine, also known as zombie servers to synchronize an attack on the website, thereby making it unstable. Many other hackers have to be involved in bringing down a website which has lots of resources. The attackers can not be detected since they are scattered and the attack is not from one IP address.

One out of ten online shoppers has been a victim of some or the other kind of Phishing attack. And almost every one has been to a site which pretends to be the original one and asks for credit card details. Not many fall for this promises, but the very few who do, end up losing a lot of money. This causes the trust on online shopping to go away and people stop stopping online altogether after one such experience. Phishing earlier was known as a way to obtain personal information about the person from his personal belongings such as the mail and the trash. This personal information can include social security number, address, birth date, credit card details and bank account numbers. But today times have changed and fraudsters have internet at their disposal. Knowing about the techniques that fraudsters use to cheat people of their private information is the best way to deal with them.

Link manipulation is one of the most common methods of Phishing where the fraudster uses a domain name that is slightly different from the genuine sites name that people trust. This misspelled domain name belongs to another spoofed organization that makes its web-site look exactly as the original one. Websites such as www.orkut.com could be named as www.orukt.com. The human mind has the tendency to read the first and the last word to read things faster. To find out if a website or an email is a fraud, you can look for various signs like the requirement to verify ones account. A genuine site will never ask anyone to verify their account. This is a technique that spammers use to get unsuspecting users to click on wrong sites. Another common threat by these Phishing sites is to respond within 48 hours or the account will be permanently closed. Mails do not contains names in the beginning.

Phishing is a term used to define a technique that online fraudsters use to steal important information from unsuspecting users. Phishing is a criminal activity that pulls out useful information such as credit card detains, personal details, usernames and passwords by appearing as another site that people mostly use every day. Some of the most common ways that Phishers dupe people is by mimicking sites such as eBay, PayPal, Visa and MasterCard sites. There are other sites such as Orkut and Facebook which are also targeted sometimes. The details entered here are used for their own benefit or is sold to someone else for a small amount.

Phishing is a very new online fraud technique which is also an example of social engineering fraud that has successfully fooled many people out of thousands of dollars. There are many techniques underway that help in dealing with these Phishing attacks like Public awareness, training on spotting original and fake, and various legislations that help in dealing with these problems. Banks are the most widely targeted websites where mails pretending to be from the bank asks for various details that will later be used to steal money from the bank account to some unknown account. The fraudsters use fraudulent emails that are sent to the customers promising real gold Rolex at half the prices on little known sites. It sometimes offers sex enhancement pills that promise various pleasures that never make it to the customer who makes the mistake of entering her password. Many email providers have a way to detect these kinds of mails and direct them to the spam mail so that the user does no click on it by mistake and ends up losing hundreds of dollars just for buying a toy for her child. Hence be careful from online phishers who find innovative ways to get usernames and passwords every day.

With increasing number of transactions being carried online, the number of problems faced by an average user is increasing logarithmically. To add to this the computers are getting faster and more complex for an common internet user who is not computer literate to know of all the threats. A user might think that installing an anti-virus is the end of all problems. Most users do not realize that an antivirus is just the first step to a secure computer. There are many more steps that need to be taken so that a computer is 100% secure. Statistics suggest that more than 91% of people online have been victims of some or the other kind of attack and still unaware of its existence.

One of the most important things to do is to install a secure browser that is free of bugs. Internet explorer is a huge no when it comes to browsing the internet. Other browsers such as Fire fox, safari and chrome are much better options that this one. Apart from a good anti-virus, you will also require a good anti-spyware. A good anti-spyware will avoid any problems with various spywares and keyloggers. Another important thing to remember is to only visit websites that are trusted. Many browsers display a sign of the trust of the site. This will help to avoid untrusted sites. Updating of the operating system along with the browser is very important for people connected to the internet. There are new bugs found every day in software’s that will lead to problems with software’s. A very pesky technique that spywares use is to mimic a site and give it the domain name with a slight difference from the first. Hence whenever you press go to a link, you will have to make sure it is the correct spelling and the correct link.

Fraudsters are no longer found ringing door bells and offering loans worth thousands of dollars. They are becoming increasingly sophisticated to the extent where the differentiation between a genius and a fraudster becomes harder. These new breed of online fraudsters are capable of hiding their IP addresses or to show duplicate IP addresses. IP addresses are like phone numbers which are assigned by the ICANN to each and every individual user around the world. These help move mails and other data around the internet. Without these numbers, anything is not permitted to be moved. Although hackers have learned innovative ways to block these IP addresses and use duplicate numbers instead. They hide their geo location to involve in crimes like credit card frauds worth million of dollars or to send anonymous emails.

Hence detecting these proxy IP addresses is of the utmost importance if you are bent on catching the person who duped you for a few hundred of dollars. Of course normal people rarely need to find out an anonymous email address. The cyber crime division has to carry this out every day. One way to detect these IP addresses is by the use of Proxy detection services which are an important tool for credit card and banks. Not always are proxy email addresses used by fraudsters and hackers, many times people use proxy IP addresses to hide their personal identity from other hackers. Proxy detection works by checking if the IP address is a proxy or not. Banks and credit card companies can easily obtain IP addresses which they check with this proxy detection services. The proxy detection service has a list of known Proxy addresses which they use to scan against them. Hence any person using a proxy IP address to stay anonymous needs to know that he is being watched and the his real IP address too can be easily found out.

Computers are getting faster with each passing day, along with them getting faster, so are the viruses, adwares, spy wares and malwares increasing in number. These malwares, Trojans, viruses and adwares can bring even a state of the art super computer on its knees. These intrusions are designed in such a way as to utilize the systems complete resources and clog the system from doing anything else. Other important software are deprives of CPU and RAM space to the extent that the program hangs itself, literally. They can drastically lower the performance of a system and cause damages of important files. You can take a few measures to avoid getting adwares to clog your computer.

The most important thing that you can do is to stop using internet explorer. Internet explores, especially the ones under the version 7 are adware heaven. This browser dominates the browser market with more than 50% if the internet users still running on this insecure browser. Instead you could use the much secure Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. These browsers aren’t easy to exploit and have built in firewalls that help in avoiding any kind of infection. Just because you use Firefox it does not mean that you don’t have to scan your PC. It is very important that a computer is scanned one a week. Hackers are innovative people who can sneak in a spyware or an adware from the backdoors. A good scanner can detect these abnormalities and get rid of them. Before downloading anything, you will have to see if the site is a trusted one. There are many sites that offer costly software for free or at a small cost. These are mostly virus or adware infected software’s that will make living hell for computer users and are harder to get rid of.

If you are a regular computer user for at least a few months, then you should have come across the word firewall. If you are a regular windows user then the pop up notifier would have at least reminded you once to activate the firewall. It not easy to miss this even while working for a month. Even if you have antivirus softwares, it most probably has asked you to install a firewall or activate its own firewall. These firewall notifications come with the warning that these things will protect your system from threats and attacks form hackers. At work when you try to access social networking sites, you might have come across that the sire has been blocked by a fire wall and cannot be accessed.

Firewall are something exactly like what they mean to be. These are barricades between the user and the internet. By user here we mean the computer network. It can be compared to a security guard who keeps vigil at the entrance, just like a firewall guards the connection between the internet and the computer network. This firewall is programmed to perform certain tasks and to allow a few connections and ban the others from coming in. A few firewalls work in predefined ways to block users which can mean harm. A few browsers such as Mozilla have predefined lists of intrusions to block. Windows allows users to configure this list as required. These are called personal firewalls and help in blocking a few intrusions that will cause damage to the computer. In companies, the firewalls are more complex and are designed to meet customized needs. It will have different rules for FTP servers and other things. Firewalls use Packet filtering or Stateful inspection or both to make useful decisions concerned with deciding incoming and outgoing traffic.

Passwords in today’s virtual world are all that protect personal identity and information. People save all of their life’s information in computes which are locked by simple six letter passwords. Hence protecting passwords becomes of the utmost importance and comes next to protecting ones purse of in some cases life. One of the easiest ways that people and criminals use to hack networks is by gaining access to passwords is by using key logger softwares,

Key loggers are a huge problem nowadays. The biggest problem with key loggers is that the software does not require any information about the computers they are installed in to steal the passwords and other details. The way this works in by memorizing every key pressed in a computer by a user. Hence any information about credit cards, personal or even confidential data can be saved in the memory of this softwares. This software later on mails the information to a remote use or just saves it until the installer comes and access the key logger software. This person then uses all the information to his benefit or sells it to some other user for high costs.

To avoid being the victim of Key loggers, you will have to be vigilant when every you enter personal information into the computer. Check in the task manager for any suspected softwares. Any new software, end it and then enter the password. If you are not sure about this softwares, then you can Google about its requirements. If this software is important for running the system, then you will certainly find out. If not then go ahead and end it. Another way is to install a good anti-virus that will avoid such as software to install in the first place. There are some softwares such as Antiloggers that detect a keylogger working in the background and stop it from stealing your password.

Ethical hackers like bank robbers have 5 levels of hacking. The first step is the reconnaissance where the hacker tests the various security measures and looks at all the functions. TH next step is scanning where the hacker goes into the depths of the software to just take a deeper look and get accustomed with the surroundings. After this the hacker attempts at gaining access to the system files and gains entry to the first few steps. After gaining entry, the hacker fortifies himself inside the network and after doing whatever he intended to do inside the network, he will begin deleting the tract left by him that will lead back to him.

The reconnaissance is the anatomy of the hacking step where the hacker gets as much information as possible from the inside. It’s like a target evaluation phase prior to beginning an attack. There are two modes of Reconnaissance; Passive and Active. In Passive reconnaissance attack, the hacker monitors the network for small clues and the different patterns. In Active reconnaissance, the hacker probes the network for open ports, vulnerabilities, accessible holes and the details of the operating system. After this step he will move on to foot printing and scanning. In foot printing, the hacker creates a blue print of the security architecture of the network so that the hacking can take place in a methodical manner. In scanning the hacker is going in a pre-attack stage where the information gathered from foot printing will be used to scan the network. Scanning is actually the extension of reconnaissance where various information such as the version of the software used is found out. Then comes the first attempts at actually penetrating the system by the mode of enumeration. Then comes the actual penetration where a true attack takes under way. The information gathered is used to make holes and get in.

Hacking and ethical hacking are the two sides of the same coin. If hacking was the evil twin, then ethical hacking will be the good twin. An ethical hacker is an computer expert who attacks a network or security system on behalf of the orders of the owners.

The owners are looking for vulnerabilities that could lead hackers to find ways into computers systems and networks. There in not difference between hackers and ethical hackers other than that ethical hackers hack for the benefit of the network owners. These hackers use the same ingenious methods that are employed by hackers. On finding a fault an ethical hacker will report it to the owner or the administrator of the site who will take action about this flaw in the site being taken advantage by a hacker for illegal purposes. Ethical hacking is known in other terms such as red teaming, intrusion testing and penetration testing among other things. A hacker who does hacking on the orders of the owner is also known as a White Hat as opposed to the black hat used by the unethical hackers.

Ethical hackers in the same way as unethical hacker look for flaw in the software codes. They follow a set of rules that are universal to all forms of hacking. An ethical hacker will snoop around the code to look for means of getting in, finding targets to attack, finding out if the obtained information form the code can be used to find some means of getting in or using it for illegal purposes. There are three classes of ethical hackers. The first class is where converted hackers turn to doing good by working for ethical purposes and the second is the white hats that begin their career as ethical hackers. The third class is of a group of professional hackers who are known as a consulting firm.

Hacking is not just something that happens in Hollywood movies. It is a real threat to thousands of computers around the world. Hacking essentially means configuring and re-programming softwares of a system to benefit the hacker and in no way facilitated by the administrator or the owner. Although there are many other meanings, but it is the above meaning that it is largely being meant nowadays. The terms hacking and hack mean the same things but hacking is given to more serious offenses. Hacking means to the stealing of credit card information, the identity theft or other forms of computer crime.

The term hacking came into use in the 1960′s in the United States University of computing center. It wasn’t meant as a derogatory terms. This was a jargon used only by computing programmers who kept trying to break each other’s softwares. This word developed to be used for using illegal intrusions by programmers to use the information for their own purposes. This word began being used by hackers and cyber-crime fighters. It is also used to define a hack of video games and extension to operating systems. Other forms of hacking are to hack graphing calculators and musical keyboards to do more than what the instrument meant to be done. Hackers are basically geniuses who can do what other programmers failed to do. Hackers pushed software designers to perform much better and design software that is hack proof.

Companies hire professional hackers to test their softwares for its security. This is becoming normal around all major operating systems and other software designers. Along with this there are regular hacking conferences where every software is put to acid test. Even after all these measures, hackers always find a way to get way into softwares. This is the reason companies release regular updates to their softwares.

A few Examples of Macro Viruses are Bablas, Relax, Melissa.A and 097M/YK.

Another virus which has made life of computers with access to USB drives is the Directory virus. This virus has the power to move from one computer to another by creating folder paths with extensions such as .EXE and .Com. These programs execute themselves in a new host and copy itself into every folder that the computer has. It moves the destination of the older virus and the new virus appears like a folder icon which will be mistakenly started by a user. It is extremely difficult to locate this virus in the computer. It property to be copied into USB drives has helped it in a big way to make hundreds of copies of this virus and in its spreading. There are many names by which these viruses spread. A few are the sms.exe files and fun.exe.

One of the most difficult viruses to detect is the Polymorphic viruses that encrypt themselves which makes their detection impossible by using antivirus. These viruses use complex encryption keys and algorithms to encode itself so that it can infect a computer and them begin spreading here. The infamous among these polymorphic viruses are the Terras, Asimov and Stator.

FAT virus is an extremely dangerous virus that attacks the FAT files of the computer. FAT files help in connecting information, i.e, in reducing Chaos and giving a meaning to 1′s and 0′s. This virus cuts off access to particular sections of the hard disk, thereby causing important files to be lost.

No one using a computer requires as introduction to Viruses as everyone knows about them. Especially people who use Windows based computers. With an increasingly digitalized world, most of the major transactions are taking place on computers. Millions of dollars is transferred with the help of computers around the world. This increased digitalization has had another back drop in the form of viruses which are meant only to steal computer viruses are the worse nightmares for many people. They can without reason delete an entire hard disk or spread themselves from one computer to another just as easily. A customer survey carried out in 2008 reports that more than $9 billion was spent on dealing with these viruses. The amount of time spent doing so can’t be calculated, but it can easily be a huge number. Its not just viruses that users have to worry about, but other problematic pests such as spywares and other such problematic inferences.

The first known virus was developed in 1949 by John Neumann. He wanted to create a program that could self replicate and spread to other computers. The same techniques were improved by hackers of that time who created much more advanced viruses. These viruses were at first only created for large computers and servers. But with the advent of online shopping and banking, the viruses spread to personal computers. And this is where viruses really began to pick speed. Early viruses had only floppy disks to spread from one computer to another. It was only after the introduction of internet, did viruses began spreading without control. Some of the worst known viruses of all time are; Melissa, I Love you, klex Virus, Code Red Virus, Nimda, SQL Slammer, Mydoom, Sasse/Netsky and Leap A. These viruses have successfully instilled the fear of viruses in computer uses.
